How will the Duncan era end? Print E-mail

All-NBA selections. Check. NBA All-Star. Check. NBA's Most Valuable Player. Check. Champion. Check.

Tim Duncan has accomplished everything there is to accomplish in his illustrious 12 year career. At the time of this article, including playoffs, he's played 40,755 minutes, scored 23,708 points and collected 12,975 rebounds, all in a Silver and Black jersey.

Obviously these numbers have increased but there's no argument that Duncan has given all his blood, sweat and tears to the franchise. But, as the saying goes, all great things must come to an end, and soon the Duncan era will come to an end.

So how will the Duncan era end? Will it end like the Robinson era? Hoisting the Larry O'Bryant trophy in the sky, showers of confetti raining down on the court. At that time, no Spur had meant more to San Antonio then David. Because of him, two things come to mind when you think of San Antonio: the Alamo and the Spurs. It was incredibly emotional to see David in his last moments as a Spur. I'd wouldn't be honest if I said I didn't cry. I think most of us did. How could you not? To see the Admiral go out on top, the person I most admired growing up, my hero, was an unforgettable moment in my life.

But will Duncan and his four championships simply ride off into the sunset headed for Springfield? He's still averaging a double-double with 19 points and 10.8 rebounds a game. And at 33-years-old, Duncan is still schooling younger players. But the Spurs are struggling, and with players like Dwight Howard, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony playing the best basketball of their careers, not to mention the Lakers and Mavericks adding pieces to their rosters that will keep them in contention for years, it seems Duncan might not make it back to the promise land.

The Spurs have shown they are willing to do what is necessary to surround Duncan with pieces he needs to get another title by acquiring Richard Jefferson and his 29.4 million dollar contract. Even though the acquisition of Jefferson hasn't panned out like we anticipated, the move by R.C. Buford shows the Spurs believe Duncan still has enough left in the tank to bring one more chip to the Alamo City.

However, taking on Jefferson's huge contract has made it seemingly difficult to sign an All-Star caliber big man that can take the torch from Duncan and carry the Spurs into the future. But Buford and the Spurs front office are one of the best in the league.  So if this season doesn't end with a parade, don't count out next season.

Buford is one of the great General Managers in the NBA. He is unafraid of taking risks and understands that Duncan is still and an elite player and in the playoffs can still put up daunting statistics. Buford's mind, like rims on an Escalade, are constantly spinning. If he can surround Duncan with the right players, then Duncan could possibly get that fifth title.

The problem is that Duncan is 33. Five years ago, any player would have taken a pay cut to come play with the great Tim Duncan and win a championship. Is there still appeal to come play for an aging superstar? Especially when he plays in one of the smallest markets in the Association. I don't remember players lining up to play with Micheal Jordan when he was in Washington.

When the Duncan era ends, it truly will be the end of an era. When Duncan goes so will Popovich, and the future of Manu is still uncertain. Parker will still be in the prime of his career when his contract expires in 2011. If the Spurs aren't contenders, don't be surprised if he goes elsewhere and tries to win a ring.

I think the Mayans were predicting about the Spurs when they came up with their 2012 end of the world prophecy.

And that's exactly how it's going to feel. It's going to feel like the end of the world once Duncan is gone throughout Spurs nation. When he goes, so will the 50 plus win seasons, the excitement of the playoffs and the belief that any season could be our season.

How do I think the Duncan era will end? As much as it hurts me to say this, I don't think Duncan will get another ring. I believe he can win another ring, but don't think it's going to happen.

On a trip to San Antonio this past week, my father told me that attendance has dipped at Spurs games this season. Could be the current state of the economy in general or because of how poorly they have been playing. But what about those seasons when we win only 30 games, even 20? Are you going to still wear your Spurs gear? Keep the emblem on your car? Keep going to games? I will. And I'll love every second of it. Because the Spurs are more then numbers in the win and loss columns. Like they've been there for us, we'll need to be there for them.

I urge you, please. Please go to these games. We are blessed to have one of the All-Time greats playing in our own backyard. Please take your children, or your grandchildren, so they can say they were able to see Timmy. If you have the opportunity to go see him play, go. If tickets are five dollars, scrape some change up from your couch or car and hit the coin-star machine. If you can't pay for parking, take the park and ride, but please, be there.  Soon he'll be gone, and all we'll have left are our pictures, screen print jerseys and trading cards, but even those won't last forever. So take every chance you have to see Tim Duncan play. Because when his era ends, and all that's left is the banners hanging in the rafters, you'll want to be able to say you saw him. And memories, it's the memories that will last a lifetime.

Thanks everyone on this page.
I am a Spurs fan in Hong Kong and I have been tracking down your blogs and the other spurs blogs to get hold of what's happening to the team.
Although we may not win this year, I still love to watch Spurs as it is really a "team" rather than bunch of players trying to show off.
I was so reluctant I did not come to a home game while I was studying in Champaign, IL.

Go spurs!

With Pop leading this team, you know there will not be any egos. Just hurts to know Spurs may not win it this yr. Chemistry seems to starting to get better but it may hurt come playoff seeding time.

Tim is the heart and soul of the Spurs. His leadership and work ethic is unequaled by anyone else in the league. As long as he continues in his current form, then there is still a chance for a championship this season. With 22 games left there is still plenty of time. Keep the faith and trust Pop and the team to get things done. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I STILL BELIEVE!!!!! 2010 THE YEAR OF THE SPURS!!!!! GO SPURS GO!!!!!
I agree beverly

Hello! Bulbulito here from the Philippines. I am a Duncan fan eversince and I almost shed a tear after reading your article. It seems like your article is already tribute for Duncan. I hate seeing him leave the game I most loved. And I still BELIEVE that Duncan and the rest of the SPURS put that spell together and brag that 5th championship, if not this year, before Duncan era ends. GO TIMMY, my IDOL ... GO SPURS!!!

the spurs need to give the duncan era a beautiful ending
written by Albert n., March 08, 2010
the spurs need an agile big man like an odom, lewis or a jamison type of a player. we also need a fast guard like a shanon brown, delonte west, who can play point as well as shooting guard. I also like to see the spurs get a true defensive player like a bowen. I don't think bogans can defend well enough to stop a kobe, a carmelo and a lebron. I don't think RJ fits the spurs he should be traded next year if he doesn't play better. The spurs should resign manu he is the spurs 2nd guy like a pippen to a jordan.
Timmy & Manu last hope at the Alamo
written by Roberto Marchetti, March 09, 2010
I believe Albert.n is correct in every sense. Specially on the Manu issue. That guy has given every bit of his sweat and blood to the Spurs and remember that even when TP was starting to appear on the team Manu & Timmy were already the heart and soul of the squad. This guy will never quit and will never ever surrender as long as he has a ball in his hands and a silver & black jersey on his shoulders. Manu will always be Obi-One Ginobili.

GO SPURS GOOOOOO!!!

The end is Now!

As much as I hate to say it, I don't see my beloved Spurs doing any more than they did last season. Down and out in the first round. I have League Pass and have been watching TD closely. He's still got the smarts but his wheels are out of air. He's much weaker on the boards and he doesn't have the necessary help of young athletic legs. Blair at 6'5" just isn't tall enough. No interior "D" means the end. Dallas, LAL etc have very athletic, long bigs. McDyess has run out of gas, again old legs, and Mahinmi looks lost out there. There is no way out with what we have. Hope we get lucky and draft a good big. Splitter won't sign, because he plans to stay in Spain. There is a legitimate chance that we'll lose Manu at the end of the season. Scary! We might be better off losing a bunch and hoping for a higher draft pick. That's how we got Duncan.smilies/cry.gif

Duncan Era
written by MOHIT, March 10, 2010
What Spurs need now is good Center. I dont believe why the management do not try to get Iglauskas. One Decent Center - Iglauskas and Duncan will solve our problem. ( Think about older version of Robinson and Duncan !!)
another back up defensive young player and defensive stopper small guard

Soo Sad, But True
written by Jason Janti, March 10, 2010
I've been a spurs fan since 89. As I keep telling all my co-workers and friends who are Milwaukee Bucks fans, the Spurs last gasp of air, their last chance to win was in the 2008 Western Conference Finals. In my opinion that was the end of their great era. And the Spurs blew it nasty like some Milwaukee's best(The Beast).
They blew a 20 point lead in game #2,( that thye had at the end of the 3rd quarter) got robbed in game 4 by a bad call from the ref on the last shot by Bones (Brent Barry)and blew a 16 point lead in game 5. In the 3rd quarter) Yes Ginobli was injured, yes their role players were starting to get older and not produce. It was very painful for me to re-watch those games against the Fakers on You Tube.
Now the Spurs got rid of role players with playoff experience, championship rings, defensive abilities, role players that new their roles. Yes these role players were againg, but they were accomplished. They replaced them with (sorry Buford) nobodys who have never done anything, don't play defense, can't make 3 pointers, and don't know their roles.
My point is the QUALITY of the Spurs role players have diminished greatly while other teams in the West are getting bigger and younger and more athletic.
Bogans will never be a Bowen caliber type player.
Mason Jr. will never be a "Big Shot Bob" or Bones.
McDyees will never be a Oberto or Udokha.
Jefferson will never be a Finley (in his prime)
Are u starting to see my point here. If the Spurs want to win more championships they need to go back to playing that lockdown defense holding teams under 90 points. They need to take care of the ball better, have way higher 3 point shooting, and execute better.
In my opinion I would keep the big 3 in tact with Hill and maybe Bonner and blow the rest of the team up. Blair is a beast but at 6'8 with no cartilige in either of his knees he can't help out Duncan defensively. When your best defender is a guard named Hill your in trouble. The spurs need to get younger, bigger, stronger, and more athletic. The frikin Mavs are the oldest team in the NBA and look at them they probably by the end of tonight will have a 13 game winning streak. I know Pop is doing the best with what he has, but it's not much.
The author in this article made a great point. 5 years ago everyone and thier Mom wanted to come to the Spurs and play for Pop. Now who wants to come to play for an aging superstar. If u don't believe me just like at this past off-season. The Spurs originally wanted Artest who would have fit great with their team but Artest refused and went to LA. Teams are already passing to come to San Antonio to go to the Fakers or other contenders.
So during the offseason the Spurs should trade Mason Jr. to the Bobcats for Bell, get rid of Jefferson, Bogans, and maybe even Blair for a couple of really good bigs, or 3 point shooters. The only reason I say Blair is because he is way to undersized and the Spurs need another twin tower. Fuck it. trade Jefferson, Bogans, Mason Jr, Blair for Griffin on the clippers.
You heard it here first.
If the Spurs want to contend again they need to get more QUALITY and not Quanity role players. Period.
Milwaukee's finest
JAY
Spurs fan since 89 when I first saw the Spurs and Mr. Robinson play the Bucks at the Bradley Center.
The Spurs have 4 champion rings. People always forget they lost 3 Western Conference Finals in the Duncan Era to the Lakers in 01, 08, and the Mavs in 06. That's 3 more championships they could have had. That would have been 7 instead of 4. The Spurs have been on top for a long time, and like I said their last real chance to win was in 08 but they blew it to the Lakers in the Western conference Finals.
Now they need to start over.
