A Midseason Look At The Richard Jefferson Trade Print E-mail

After last season's early exit in the playoffs, the Spurs felt for them to be able to continue to compete at a high level and take advantage of the waning years of Duncan as a Spur, a change was needed.

It was for this reason why they went all out during the offseason and made some drastic moves to hopefully build a team that would allow them to compete for another NBA title. One of the roster moves they made was getting Richard Jefferson from the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Bruce Bowen, Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas.

At the time, people believed that Jefferson will make a big difference for the Spurs because he brings in some youth, athleticism and offensive fire power at the Small Forward position, something the Spurs didn't have in the past.

rjdrives

Now after 42 games as a Spur, Jefferson is averaging 12.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.1 assist in 31 minutes of action. As the team's third or fourth wheel on offense, these numbers look acceptable but it's important to note that his production dropped to just 10.8 points, 2.7 boards and 1.2 assist in January.  Case in point, his performance last night against the Chicago Bulls was atrocious and forgettable.

Looking further for stats, I found out that Richard Jefferson is getting most of his points on jump shots in fact 68% of his shot attempts or on jumpers.

It could mean he is taking advantage of the open looks being created when players like Duncan is being double teamed down low or it may also mean that he is being too passive on offense settling for jumpers instead of taking it to the hole.

The recent drop in his numbers is another reason for worry because and this point Jefferson should be more comfortable with the system and his teammates. Not the other way around.

For the record, Jefferson is a good basketball player but in my humble opinion he hasn't earned his paycheck. Some even played with the idea of trading him before the February deadline and even Jefferson himself agrees that he has underachieved so far.

To be honest, it’s hard to figure out whether the Jefferson trade is working or not. A lot of things need to be considered to conclude such a statement. Besides, the Spurs have not played to a level they would like to be as a unit especially on the defensive end.

But I can say this, Richard Jefferson still has hops and the Spurs need to take advantage of his athletic abilities. Maybe they have to run more often to get more points in transition or design more isolation plays that would allow Jefferson to be more aggressive on offense and attack the rim rather than just taking jump shots.

rjdunks That way opposing teams will be forced to adjust on defense than usual because it will add another dimension to the Spurs' offense. On defense, Richard Jefferson is not a defensive stopper although he has proven to be a capable defender.

But are the Spurs getting their money's worth in Jefferson?

This is what Coach Pop has to say when that question was asked.  "Those kind of opinions are for you all (in the media) to form, we just go to work every day and try to be the best team we can be. You can assess it any way you want.”

Evidently, the Spurs believe that they can still get better as the season goes on. Coach Pop is finding ways to make it happen. In  the mean time, Jefferson still needs to prove that the Spurs made no mistake in trading for him.

Should the Spurs trade Jefferson? Do the Spurs need to allow him to move more “freely” on offense to be more productive or is he scoring enough points and just need to improve on the defensive side of the floor? Share us your thoughts.

any value

Not sure that RJ has any value for a trade right now don't you think? I, like many, thought he would push the Spurs back up into title contention but since he has been underperforming is anyone going to think that he'd be different in another situation? On another team? It seems like the Spurs have made their bed w/ RJ...but it's not too late though. There's still time for the team to get it together.

i agree with upperbowl. RJ has no value right now since he's underperforming. do you guys think he's unhappy being the 4th option so he's not stepping up his game, waiting to get traded? or do u guys think he's on cruise control cuz he thinks the others will pick up the slack since he says he's gonna get paid no matter wut in some interviews a while back when asked what are his thoughts about being 4th option. i haven't been able to watch the past few games, so I can't even tell if he's trying, but stuck in a slump, or just don't care. from past practice interviews, he keeps saying this game doesn't matter, that game doesn't matter, which makes me wonder if he took "not putting too much thought into one game" too far and so it seems like he's not caring period. any thoughts, guys?

In the past, the Spurs usually turn it on at this point. Now remember, the team has never gone through such an overhaul in the Duncan era. It might take a bit longer for them to get it together this year. Hopefully, their record is good enough to get them in the playoffs with a decent seed.

As far as Jefferson is concerned, he's obviously not being aggressive enough. Pop and the rest of the team need to get on his ass. Also, why not rest Parker, give Jefferson his shots and run some more plays for him.

It's not too late. Hope is alive and well!

C'mon people really, there doing terrible you cant have 3 all stars starting on a team and not get it done, this reminds me of when kobe, gary payton, and karl malone were playing all together and they underproduced, trade RJ and maybe mason jr or finley for Amare straight up. The time is up they have played what about 38 games, All star game is in 3 weeks, we have 24 road games or home games left were terrible on the road, theres no excuse, we need to either get amare or make a run at bosh (which i doubt toronto is going to trade him) but no excuse the guys are not taking there shots, manu needs to stop faking a three and running in for the layup! Its too difficult to pin point whats going on, i hope RJ doesnt care, he wants a ring badly and I want to see him get one! Hope is NOT alive we need a star for a star!

RJ has not met the expectation of the Spurs but I'm giving him a little bit more time. Last night's performance was his worst as a Spur, maybe Pop needs to be hard on him.

Does RJ really want a ring? The guy hasn't played well enough to his potential and at his point, maybe a trade is the only solution maybe for SJax or G. Wallace? What do you think guys?

upperbowljazzfan, I agree with what you said about RJ his trade value might be down right now. Besides incorporating another player in the system late in the season is hard to do. We saw how that went last season with Gooden. I'm still hopeful that the Spurs can get it done in time.

AmyfromLA, to be fair i think Jefferson is trying but maybe not hard enough. He needs to be more aggressive on offense and attack the basket instead of settling for jumpers.

three2juan, good point! agree with what you said, although I don't know how long my patience would be if the Spurs don't play any better. It's not just RJ that is struggling, it's the team as a whole.

Samir, getting Amare is a good idea because it will provide the Spurs another big man but the Suns will NOT trade him to the Spurs but we'll never know right?

Jason, I hope RJ picks up his game sonner than later he needs to step it up!

SpursFanHenry, NBA players dream of winning a title hopefully Jefferson will realize that and start playing better. Your trade proposals for Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson is interesting.

Thanks for all the great comments guys and for keeping things here lively, we appreciate it!

What got to me last night guys is RJ was having an atrocious game vs the Bulls. So what did Pop do? Put him in during the crucial moments of the game. WTH Pop! RJ wasn't producing at all during the game and you put him in?

I say be more patient! The Spurs are known to make their run during the second half of the season.

Right Jeff that move by Pop was a head scratcher.
trade RJ and Mason Jr.?
written by aaron widder, January 26, 2010
the spurs have to go after someone who is a big name in the nba..they have to have someone besides Timmy to turn to for consistent scoring!..they should totaly go after amare,bosh,g.wallace,s.jackson,someone who is usually always a 100% every game..they cant afford an early exit this year after this kinda offseason!
....
written by MarK_M, January 26, 2010
@aaron I agree considering what the Spurs did in the offseason an early playoff exit in unacceptable.
...
written by RobbyLim, January 26, 2010
Aaron, the guys you mentioned can certainly help the Spurs but their teams might not take RJ in return.

Aaron and Mark you're both right! The Spurs can't afford another early playoff exit. The expectation in San Antonio is to always win a championship. For that to happen, they should get back on track soon and win more games as the season goes on.

Thanks for the comments and keep it coming!

I got an even better trade idea, how about trade tony or manu for danny granger that will solidify i sg and sf spot and plus he good he can take over a game.
...
written by Samir, January 26, 2010
yea i kinda know phoneix wont trade amare to the spurs, it would be foolish! but granger i forgot about that would be a great trade! when i mentioned he can take over a game i mean he can still score the ball with respect to duncan ofcourse that is still his team!

i agreee, the suns wont trade amare to the spurs, but i also dont see san anton trading parker either. i can possibly see them shopping manu though! the bottom line is they for sure need to pick up a impact player, some kinda young veteran player, not another drew gooden tho! anyone have any possible REALISTIC trade ideas???

All, we can only speculate on trades; most of them might not even happen. To be realistic, I don't see the Spurs trading RJ at this point or even Manu for that matter. I think they will stick with this group and see how it goes.

Although Granger to the Spurs would be nice. If something comes up about a trade that involves the Spurs we will let you guys know.

Again many thanks for keep discussions here lively. Thanks for the comments!

I think RJ should have more plays run for him, get him comfortable. He has shown glimpses of great contribution, a las in spots. See the win against Dallas that he produced early in the season, or his defense against Paul Pierce. Or the bit more recent blocks that he gave. If he can become comfortable in being consistent like that, the Spurs can be deadly. The Spurs problems is more of a team thing. For instance defense. Furthermore, as Wayne pointed out in PTR, the Big Three, other than Duncan, hasn't really been that consistent. The optimistic look is Manu is healthy, and if he continues to be healthier, our ceiling becomes alot alot higher. The downside is Tony is hurt. Last year he's amazing. This year, hes good but hurt. TD played well with Plantar F in 2006, that we almost won another championship that year. Let's hope Tony becomes healthier.

The biggest problem right now for the Spurs is lack of team defense ala the layup drill we are giving other teams. The focus is whether we can be a good, or great, defensive team. Least not forget, we do have Ratliff saved for the playoffs. Ratliff, TD/McDyess (good D on Dirk), RJ/Manu, Bogans, and Hill/Parker (not so bad on defense as some think) is a pretty good crunch time defensive lineup. Now the problem is - will this combination produce enough wins. Oh btw, Blair is great for rebounds which is defensive. If he improves on his man to man defense, we'll get better. RMJ puts in effort on defense and has shown good glimpses too, grabbing deb boards. Oh and Bonner hustles in spite of his lack of athletic ability.

As for RJ's offense, it comes and goes - sometimes I think the Spurs have TOO MUCH offensive weapons - in the sense that there's only ONE ball. So many people can score, but like others have pointed out, we're relying on a lot of isolation plays. Notice that when we move the ball around, we're pretty darn good. So we need to continue to be a better team. The best news is everyone, based on their interviews, have a desire to practice/work hard at getting better. Let's not forget, it wasn't too long ago we crushed Miami etc. and showed a lot of good game.

The Spurs have X games to get better defensively and offensively. Can that happen? Can we improve every game on these two ends. The answer is yes.

Another word on RJ's offense. If he's the fourth option, it's harder for someone to be on a groove consistently. Arguably, he's the fourth option because he's not consistently producing. But in my humble opinion, i think its more a case of him not feeling a sense of ownership in the "scoring pie". I think he still has some mentality of let TD get his, Tony, Manu, sometimes I'd get mine - that's understandable he's new to a team that has won four championships and he doesn't feel as comfortable, i hope, yet. When he was in NJ or Milwaukee, he knew he can take shots and shots. With a bit more freedom, sometimes it frees up a player's mentality. Running plays for him early may be a good policy. Here in San Antonio, he probably feels its an orange light situation - is there a better option? and with a difficult system to learn - it makes him less instinctive.

In my humble opinion, i think we're going to be most dangerous when we can play TEAM (emphasis) defense and move the ball around. Oh, and if, health permits, we 're going to be dangerous. Now, the other concern is Tony's foot, and to a lesser extent, whether Manu will continue to gain form and consitency.

First of all, thanks for your continued support here at Project Spurs!

Very nice analysis about the Spurs, I agree the main problem with them right now is defense. In the past, the Spurs seem to make a defensive stop on call, but right now they can't do that anymore (but I still hope they can improve in this regard). Besides that, the Spurs have to many defensive lapses.

As for our offense, isolation plays might help RJ to be more aggressive on offense giving another dimension on Spurs' offense. It's also important for us to shoot the ball well because it will make Duncan's life easier inside the paint. But if we don't shoot the ball well, then the middle is clogged making it hard for the Spurs to score down low.

As you mentioned, health is also important Tony and Finley needs to get healthy and our shooters Mason and Bonner need to make their shots. I believe that Duncan will continue playing like Duncan and Manu will get back to being Manu.

I'm cautiously optimistic with the Spurs right now because they still have a long ways to go to being where they want to be. On the other hand, they have a lot areas where they can improve on. Let's hope they can get it done.

Thanks for commenting and keep it coming we appreciate it!
