Spurscast 337: Enter the Doldrums

NBA Free Agency is still rolling but the feeding frenzy is well over. LeBron James has gone back home to Ohio and veteran Pau Gasol went with his “instinct” in picking Chicago over San Antonio. The postseason scene in the Western Conference looks almost untouched but figuring out the playoff contenders in the East is still as confusing as ever. And while everyone else around the NBA is wondering if Kevin Love and Andrew Wiggins will trade area codes, Spurs fans are fretting what the Spurs are going to do with the 15th and final spot on the roster. There is also the hand-wringing over whether or not Manu Ginobili is going to play summer ball if he is medically cleared from yet another lower leg injury.

Benjamin Bornstein (@THE_BOOMSTEIN) joins host Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) to yammer on about the long NBA summer. Welcome to the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast. (more…)

Spurscast 336: New Car, Caviar

The San Antonio Spurs have taken care of both Boris Diaw and Patty Mills with three-year deals but the name grabbing the headlines around South Texas is that of Pau Gasol. The 34-year old Spaniard is currently weighing his options but is San Antonio the top contender for his next career destination?

The Spurs have also been busy  filling their Summer League roster. Rookie Kyle Anderson is ready to make his team debut and we will playing alongside a handful of previous Spurs draft picks. Will Deshaun Thomas or Marcus Denmon make the jump to the NBA? Are there other “no-names” that will rise from the ashes a la Gary Neal style?

Injuries, rumors, and more. Welcome to the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast.

Project Spurs’ Paul Garcia interviewed on Ticket760

Our own Paul Garcia was interviewed this morning on the Spurs offseason by Chris Duel, stepping in for Mike Taylor this week on Ticket 760.

Paul and Chris talked about Bryce Cotton joining the Spurs for Summer League and the impending free agency period.

Paul said he expects Diaw to be back with the team, and unless Patty Mills is wooed by a team with starting minutes and a starting player’s salary, he thinks there’s a good chance Mills will rejoin the silver and black.

Listen to the full interview below for more on the Spurs’ offseason and about how one Spurs player could be on his way out today.

Spurscast 335: Refueling the Machine

Tim Duncan answered the $10.3-million dollar question earlier this week when he exercised his player option for the 2014-15 season. The upcoming season will be the 18th NBA tour of duty for the now five-time champion and possibly the future Hall of Famer’s final swan song. The biggest roster question may have been answered but the Spurs must now address Patty Mills, Boris Diaw, and Matt Bonner in the pending free agency.

The San Antonio Spurs drafted UCLA’s Kyle Anderson with the 30th pick in last night’s NBA draft. Plenty of experts heaped praise again on San Antonio for yet another steal but your hosts, Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) and Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023), shamefully had to Google him like common folk…

Spurscast 334: Cinco

The San Antonio Spurs are your 2014 NBA Champions. Feels good to read that sentence for the 100th time, doesn’t it?

The Spurs put on the most dominant Finals performance in NBA history while capturing their fifth NBA title, the first San Antonio championship since 2007. It has been an incredible and memorable season for both players and fans alike, a season fueled by the Finals nightmare of 2013. Redemption is a rare opportunity and the Spurs put on an incredible show in their second chance against the Miami Heat.

Paul Garcia (@PaulGarciaPS) rejoins hosts Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) and Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) to recap the NBA Finals and bask in the glorious glimmer of the Spurs’ fifth Larry O’Brien trophy.

Spurscast 333: Two in the Box, Ready to Go

The San Antonio Spurs now hold a familiar 2-1 advantage in the 2014 NBA Finals after trucking the Miami Heat 111-92 in the American Airlines Center this past Tuesday. Kawhi Leonard led the Spurs with a career best performance with 29 points (10-13 FG) while also limiting and frustrating the best basketball player on the planet, LeBron James. It was an incredible performance from San Antonio but the Miami Heat will not shrink away from the pressure of a deficit. Game 4 is tonight (8:00 PM CST) and the Spurs will need to bring every bit of energy they put on display the other night.

Paul Garcia (@PaulGarciaPS) rejoins hosts Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) and Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) to recap the first three games of the NBA Finals and predict the future. It’s the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast.

Spurscast 332: There Will Be Blood

The San Antonio Spurs won their sixth Western title over the past weekend, winning a wild Game Six in Oklahoma City. Tim Duncan and the Spurs are now in their first consecutive NBA Finals appearance but they’ll be facing the super team that broke their hearts in 2013. Is payback all but certain for San Antonio? Or does LeBron James and the Miami Heat have a locked-in date with three-peat history?

Paul Garcia (@PaulGarciaPS) joins hosts Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) and Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) recap the ending of the Western Conference Finals and preview the pending grudge match between Miami and San Antonio. It’s the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast.

Spurscast 331: Or Maybe Not

Things are a bit tense in Spurs Nation now that the series is even at 2-2. The San Antonio Spurs have looked intimidated and tentative while the Oklahoma City Thunder continue to gain momentum. Has the return of Serge Ibaka really impacted the series this much?

Hosts Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) and Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) talk Games 3 and 4 as well as the possible adjustments moving forward. Is this 2012 all over again or do the Spurs have it in them to move past this road block? It’s the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast.

Spurscast 330: A Different Mountain

Through two games of the Western Conference Finals, the San Antonio Spurs have simply obliterated the Oklahoma City Thunder by an average of 26 points. The series resumes in Oklahoma this Sunday and it will likely be a night of desperate play by the Serge Ibaka-less Thunder. The Thunder were able to conquer a 0-2 mountain back in the 2012 Conference Finals, winning four straight through physical athleticism and stifling defense. But this is 2014 and these teams are hardly comparable to the squads that clashed in the recent lockout season. This is not the same mountain.

[Update: Serge Ibaka's status has been upgraded to "day-to-day." Whether the Thunder exaggerated the grade 2 sprain or Ibaka's body just recovered quicker than anticipated, we'll never know.]

Hosts Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) and Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) take an in-depth look at the first two games and jabber on about what adjustments either team might make. It’s the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast.

Spurscast 329: Western Conference Finals Preview

It’s a rematch of the 2012 Western Conference Finals and the San Antonio Spurs are hoping to return the favor against the wounded Oklahoma City Thunder. How does the loss of Serge Ibaka impact the series? Just how important is Tony Parker’s hamstring and could it alone kill the Spurs title hopes?

Hosts Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) and Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) break it all down and predict who will be moving on to the NBA Finals. It’s the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast.

Spurscast 328: Gentleman’s Sweep?

The Portland Trailblazers avoided elimination on Monday night, out-hustling the San Antonio Spurs 103-92 in front of their raucous Portland crowd. The series the resumes back home today in the Alamo City but will the Spurs be able to resume their dominance on the court? The Oklahoma City and Los Angeles series appears that it may go the distance but who do the Spurs match up better against?

Also on Episode 328: The Eastern series, Donald Sterling is beyond insane, Van Gundy’s new gig, George Karl’s next gig, and the Steve Kerr media circus. Hosts Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) and Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) break it all down for you. It’s the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast.

Spurscast 327: Old Guys Win Again

So who among you predicted an absolute rout of the Portland Trailblazers*? The San Antonio Spurs embarrassed the visiting Trailblazers 116-92 this past Tuesday, making it essentially an encore of their impressive series-clinching performance against the Dallas Mavericks. Damian Lillard and company looked rattled against the Spurs all-out attack and trailed by double-digits for over 90% of the game. Many had this series pegged as yet another tough battle but did the results of the opening game change anyone’s prediction?

Also on Episode 327: R.C. Buford, Charles Barkley, the tired narrative of age, and the continued glorification of Aron Baynes. Hosts Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) and Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) break it all down for you. Heck, they even use crayons and small words. It’s the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast.

Spurscast 326: Back to Reality

The San Antonio Spurs have climbed back from an unexpected 1-2 deficit and are now one victory away from moving on to the Western Conference Semi-Finals. What finally went right for the Spurs that wasn’t happening in the first three games of the series? Who is the series MVP so far and who has yet to show up to the post-season? We take another look around the Western Conference playoffs and we also try to make sense of the Bizarro Universe that exists inside DeJuan Blair’s head.

Stephen Anderson (@andersonstevem) once again joins hosts Jose Grijalva (@JRG1023) and Aaron Preine (@DukeOfBexar) to hash it all out.

It’s the one and only Spurscast. The original Spurs Podcast.
